By far the most vigorous and extensive section of the TUI library
is the e-journal collection. For most students the collection
will be the most frequently accessed resource. In the broadest
terms, an e-journal collection is a database that indexes and
holds articles on a given subject. A collection may be general
in scope (ProQuest-academic research) or specific in focus (Cinahl-nursing).
Collections have two main components—the indexing function,
the lens through which the collection is accessed and examined—and
the e-journals themselves, the electronic versions of the subscribed
periodicals. TUI has chosen some of the collections for the
thoroughness of the index, some for the variety of formats of
the holdings, and some for the depth and variety of the periodicals
held.
Perhaps the most important facts to grasp in researching e-journal
collections are these:
THERE IS NO ONE INDEX
OF ALL THE E-JOURNAL DATABASES.
THEREFORE,
NO ONE DATABASE HOLDS ALL OF THE ANSWERS.
CONCOMITANTLY,
ALMOST ALL DATABASES OVERLAP IN SOME AREAS.
Therefore, the following are important ideas to
keep in mind:
- The student must search all databases concerned with a certain
topic, because different databases may index different periodicals
on the same subject.
- Databases differ not only in the periodicals that they index,
but also in the formats in which they hold those periodicals
(abstract, full-text, illustrations).
- A database may not hold the full-text of all articles that
it indexes. In fact, the indexing function is often much more
extensive than holdings within the collection. The vigorous
indexing allows the student to be aware of the scholarly activity
on a certain subject and to give him or her a direction to
follow in further pursuit of the subject.
- TUI has a variety of databases and, therefore, often more
than one subscription to a given periodical. If the student
finds the periodical in one database in abstract, for example,
he or she may find it in full-text in another. Therefore,
it is very important to know the characteristics, qualities
and holdings within each database.
- Databases do not cross-index. In other words, each database
“knows” only what it holds and will not refer
the student to another location within the TUI library. Therefore,
if a student finds a citation regarding an article that he
or she would like to access, he or she may need to search
several databases to find the article in full-text format.
- When accessing certain databases, an account name or password
will be required. This means that the student has accessed
a proprietary database, one which charges a fee. TUI has already
paid the fee (it is included in student tuition) and the account
name and password are security measures that insure that the
University is complying with licensing agreements.

In summary, the student should familiarize him or herself with
the various databases within his or her academic discipline.
He or she should search each of the relevant collections and
choose the material and format which best explores, supports
or explains his or her research question. There is no one database
which holds all of the answers: this is both the glory and frustration
of scholarship.
